Pellworm, North Frisian Island

read the related chapter 9 in our book:
Surviving below the sealevel, DE link

Pellworm, North Frisian Island, Pellworm and Süderoog are part of the small island group left over from the big flood of 1634 where thousands of people died and the North Sea coast was torn into pieces. Like the Netherlands theland needs strong coastal protection. And with climate change and rising sea levels this might get even more important in the future. Pellworm is known as the island “like a soup plate”. lying 1m below (!) sealevel.
Since the beginning of the 1990ies Pellworm the island has embarked on a path of sustainability focussing since then on the topic of renewable energy and a sustainable way of life on the island.
Ökologisch Wirtschaften! (“Manage ecologically!”) was founded in 1990 as a non-profit organisation by a group of concerned inhabitants of Pellworm island and is since then promoting integrated sustainable island development initiatives.
Due to its committments in the renewable energy sector Ökologisch Wirtschaften! is member of the EU network ISLENET, the European Islands Energy and Environment Network.
